Chat recap with our VP of Engineering, Dr. Weijia Zhang: Q. Any update on L2 bridges? A. For L2 bridges, the paper has been published. The testing is on going. Weijia Q. The competition is getting heated up for cross-chain bridges. Can Weijia evaluate the wanchain tech comparing to competitors (Anyswap/Fusion, REN, Hop-exchange (changes stables coins between ethereum L2 cheaply), rubiks exchange,...) concerning the aspects: decentralization, security. If WANchain has the upperhand, marketing the advantages in a comparison table could be interesting. A. We have done competitor studies and gathered lots of data. The comparison can be done with different criteria. Wanchain stands out with more consideration on security and decentralization aspects of bridges. I am working with EEA on crosschain security guidelines paper. Another paper is crosschain decentralization guidelines. Weijia Q. Is it possible to have something similar like video gaming NFT dapps on wanchain? A. Zookeeper is doing a great job with NFTs. Gamifying NFTs is a great idea, but I personally think that think this should not be built by Wanchain’s core team. It should come from community developers. We have funding to support and incentivise these developers, which should be announced soon. Our current core competency is building crosschain bridges. When it comes to NFT gaming, one requirement is a decentralised storage solution. For NFT gaming to thrive on Wanchain, I think it should be crosschain. Weijia Q. what is your role in the eth alliance and where does wanchain fit within this alliance? A. I am chairing the Crosschain interoperability workgroup together with experts in ConsenSys and Clearmatics. Wanchain crosschain technology gets into specs and framework. Weijia Q. Another question. Right now the cost of bridging CFI on anyswap is more cheaply on anyswap then on wanchain. Unfortunately, CFI has been promoting the Anyswap bridge more (instead of wanbridge) because of this. So for business development this cost is an important issue. How is it possible that ANY have even lower costs than WAN in their bridging while WAN is apparently already making 0 or negative profits on these bridgings. Is it because ANY is centralized? A. In basic terms, the cost for a crosschain transaction comes from three sources: the transaction fee on the source chain, the transaction fee on the target chain, and the crosschain bridge fee itself. One approach to keep transaction fees low on the source and target chains is to only rely on basic token transfer transactions, rather than smart contracts. This is because basic transactions use less gas than smart contract transactions. If all you are interested in is moving assets, relying on basic asset transfers can be a defensible approach. Wanchain, however, uses uses smart contracts whenever possible on all the networks connected to our crosschain infrastructure. While the gas fees are higher, we have made this decision because we are interested in more than just the transfer of assets. We believe the future of blockchain interoperability lies in crosschain data management and crosschain commands. Both these are beyond the scope of basic transactions and require smart contracts. Weijia Q. Any other blockchains in the pipeline to be added in 2021 or just polkadot? A. Yes, several in the pipelines. Tem will share the info later (NDA signed). Weijia Q. Can you share about Singapore cdbc challenge? A. We did not get it from MAS. But we still exploring the solution with partners( NDA signed again). Weijia Q. Do you think it’s possible to create a decentralized NFT bridge? A. Yes, Vitalik wrote a crossRollup post in Eth Research. I responded in the thread as well. The challenging is the security and uncertainty of NFT price. It is very arbitrary and staking/slashing model might need to be adjusted. Weijia Q. any eta on the polka dot bridge?
